Nicole, I have spent the last few days sifting through 8,903 messages of late arrivals, lowercase okays and one S$4.80 bubble tea that has been doing the emotional labour of an entire relationship single-handed.
You are not a couple. You are not even a situationship. You are a customer service hotline with exactly one agent on shift, and that agent is you, taking calls since July 2025 from a man who swears he is on his way to the counter while standing in his flat with one sock on and no idea where his keys are.
Let’s read the transcript.
Who You Both Think You Are
Nicole: The Smiling Grudge Accountant
You have turned the word ok into a filing cabinet for every crime ever committed against you. Each one you send is a sealed envelope with three paragraphs of fury inside, posted to a man who has never once opened his mail. As you replied, the afternoon he cancelled lunch by text:
ok. no worries!!
thanks for understanding!
Translated: he was dead to you, cordially, and he thanked you for the discount. You want to be understood without ever saying anything, which is a reasonable standard for a psychic and an insane one for a man who reads only the words. From outside you look like the patient one. From inside you are a tax auditor with a crush, building a case file one lowercase letter at a time.
Ivan: The Otw Fraud
Ivan has never once been on his way to anything; he has only ever been about to be. Otw, in his hands, is not a location but a mood, a weather forecast and occasionally a lie he tells himself first. As he announced one Saturday, at 7.04pm and then at 7.19pm:
otw!! where are my keys sorry wrong chat. otw
Wrong chat, he said, as if there were a right chat for that. He is warm, quick with a babe and a praying-hands emoji, and sincerely sorry every time, which is exactly why it never works: sorry is not a timetable. He reads your ok as ok because it is the comfiest reading on offer, and nobody has ever charged him for comfort. Ivan is not cruel; he is a delayed train who thinks the apology announcement counts as arriving.
The Trap: A Factory for Turning Feelings Into Timetables
Every disappointment in this chat goes in as a feeling and comes out as logistics. You write “it’s fine”. He replies with an ETA. You write “haha”. He sends a sticker of a running cat. It is a factory for converting heartbreak into admin, and neither of you will admit you built it together.
You said ok and meant a three-page complaint, and he read ok and went back to his game.
Call it the Courtesy Spiral: the politer you get, the less he knows, and the less he knows, the more reasons he hands you to be polite. Your patience is the fuel, his lateness is the engine, and the only thing either of you has ever done about the noise is turn up the radio.
And you, Nicole, are the one keeping the receipts. You could have ended the spiral with one honest sentence in August 2025. Instead you chose fourteen months of evidence gathering, which is not patience, it is a prosecution with no trial date and a defendant who does not know he has been charged.
Your Private Dialect, Translated
Every couple invents a language. Yours has five phrases, two of them are lies and the rest are threats.
Otw means he has thought about leaving. Otw time is forty-five minutes, a currency you both trade in and neither of you ever agreed an exchange rate for.
ok., with the full stop, means leave me alone. ok lor means I have already left, you just have not been informed. no worries!!, with the double exclamation mark, is the sound of a door being shut very gently so the neighbours do not hear.
haha, from Ivan, means something is funny. From you it means something has just stopped being funny, and he is expected to work out which thing, unaided, from a shortlist of fourteen months.
And peace offering?, question mark included, is an apology, a plea and an out-of-court settlement, all for S$4.80. The dictionary only works one way: you have studied every word he ever sent, and he has never opened yours.
A Live Reading: Your Birthday, 19 March
A 7pm reservation, a birthday girl and a man who believes in the future:
Where are you? Reservation is at 7
otw!!
Which MRT
Just leaving
Just leaving, at 7.12pm, for a 7pm table. That is not a location; it is a confession on a time delay. The restaurant held the table for forty minutes, and so did you, alone, in a chair warmed entirely by your own resentment.
It's fine, take your time
Thanks babe 🙏 you're the best
haha
Read it again. You told a man forty minutes late for your birthday to take his time, he thanked you for being easy, and you answered with a laugh that has never once contained a joke. That is the whole relationship in nine words: you pay, he thanks you for the discount, and the receipt goes into a drawer in your head that is now the size of a Shenton Way archive.
The Timeline of a Slow Leak
3 August 2025. The first ok with a full stop, after he cancelled lunch by text and thanked you for understanding something you had not understood at all.
19 March 2026. Your birthday, forty minutes alone at a table for two, and a haha that went straight into evidence.
14 August 2026. The S$4.80 bubble tea arrived with a question mark attached, you accepted it, and then neither of you said a word for two days.
20 September 2026. You asked if you could talk, he said sure, after his match, and the match is now the longest-running fixture in this relationship.
What You Each Actually Wanted
Nicole, you wanted him to guess right, and you wanted to be a little hurt that he had to guess at all. You wanted proof you were not the only one reading closely, and no amount of bubble tea was ever going to supply it.
Ivan wanted to be forgiven in advance, for this lateness and the next one and the one after that. He wanted someone who would never make him feel what being late costs, and he found her, and he has been running up her tab ever since.
The Ruling
Neither of you is the villain, which is a pity, because a villain can at least be dumped. You have the same affection, different keyboards and fourteen months in which every important sentence was shortened to two letters. He will arrive eventually, Nicole, but you have been sitting at that table so long that you have become part of the furniture he is late for.
