I have spent the last few days sifting through 18,930 messages of glitter roses at dawn, scam warnings forwarded by the only woman in Singapore who has never once spotted a scam, and a grandson reading every word of it in the dark like a man watching his own house burn down on CCTV.
You are not a family chat. You are not even a family. You are a dawn roll call run by a grandmother with a glitter licence, where five relatives salute a pink rose the size of a car bonnet every morning at 6.02am and the sixth sells the footage to his cousins.
Attendance is compulsory. Let's take it.
The Roll Call: Six Relatives, Zero Spines
Ah Ma: "Ma" / The Dawn Glitter Dictator
Ah Ma is not a grandmother. She is a head of state who found the forward button in 2023 and has governed with it ever since, one rose so loaded with glitter that it lands in the phone like a car crash at a wedding. She sent Wednesday's blessing on a Thursday, then took attendance on it:
[image: pink rose, gold glitter] Blessed Wednesday to my family 🙏 Only one person reply me. The rest all sleeping is it
Wrong day, wrong blessing, and she still had the nerve to mark the register. This is a surveillance state built out of flowers: answer within the hour or get a 7am voice note asking whether you have forgotten where you came from. When her grandson went quiet, she went straight to the nuclear option:
Ah Boy three days never answer Ah Ma. Next time I send the roses to the cat
She threatened to replace a human grandson with a cat, and the worst part is that the cat replies faster. She does not want love, she wants a signature, and she has five hostages who keep signing.
Second Uncle: The Thumb With No Brain Attached
Second Uncle has not typed a full sentence in this chat since they changed the coins. He speaks only in thumbs-up, one yellow digit that has meant yes, no, seen, congratulations, condolences and I am driving, sometimes inside the same afternoon. When Mum asked him something with an actual date in it:
Uncle can you fetch Ma on Sunday or not?
👍
Is that yes or no. Dad.
👍
That is not an answer, that is a coin toss with a fingernail. Second Uncle has shrunk the English language down to one gesture and then lost the manual for it himself, which is how he ended up at reunion dinner alone, outside the wrong restaurant, giving a thumbs-up to a shutter.
Auntie Siew Lan: The One-Woman Scam Distribution Network
Auntie Siew Lan is the reason scammers stopped bothering with cold calls. She forwards every warning, hoax and chain letter at 1am in capital letters, with the energy of a woman saving her family from danger and the track record of a woman who has never checked anything in her life. Her finest work, on a Tuesday:
URGENT!!! WhatsApp will charge 50 cents per message from Monday. Forward to 10 people to stay free
Siew Lan this one is fake, the news already said
Better forward than sorry
Better forward than sorry is not a motto, it is a confession. She is the fire and the fire brigade, sprinting into every blaze with her own matches. Nobody in this family has ever seen her notice anything, and she would forward it if they had.
Dad: The Man Who Signs His Own Texts
Dad signs every message with his own title and a full stop, as if a second man in this chat writes in full stops and he must protect the brand. He writes to his children like a notice from the land office, and his love, when it comes, arrives with a reference number. His command of technology peaked on a Saturday night:
Aircon man say $180 for chemical wash. Too expensive. I think he is cheating us. Dad. Sorry wrong chat. Dad.
who you meant to send??
Second Uncle. Dad.
He leaked a private aircon negotiation to six relatives, apologised, then named the intended recipient: a man who is already in this chat and answers only in thumbs. Dad owns a phone, a family and a direct line to his own brother, and still cannot get a message into the right room. He is a full stop wearing a polo shirt.
Mum: The Unpaid Switchboard of the Dynasty
Mum answers every rose within sixty seconds, every morning, with the dead-eyed reliability of a woman who stopped having a choice in 2023. She is the only person here who replies in words, which makes her the only person who can be blamed for them. Her reward for covering for the grandson:
Ah Boy where
He is busy Ma, he says good morning 🌹
ok Ah Ma
He had said nothing of the sort, and he surfaced three days later with two lowercase words. Mum is not a mother in this chat, she is a defence lawyer who has never won a case and keeps taking the same client for free. The most competent woman in the family has spent three years running a call centre for people who do not call.
Shawn: "Ah Boy" / The Mute Button With a Grandson Attached
Shawn muted this chat in March 2024 and has read every message since, at 11pm, in the dark, like a war correspondent embedded with a family he refuses to join. His replies arrive three days late, in lowercase, and they all say the same thing. His entire contribution to a week of roses:
ok
Meanwhile every rose, hoax and wrong-chat aircon dispute gets screenshotted into a cousins-only group with a crying-laughing emoji, which makes him not a grandson but a mole with a data plan. The one time he typed a full sentence here, it went like this:
Anyone using the car this Saturday? Need it for something
Ah Boy!!! 🌹🌹🌹
Who is this stranger
Three days of silence for his grandmother, eleven seconds of typing for a Honda. Shawn uploaded this chat to watch his family get roasted, and he is the only person in it who has never once done his shift. Ah Ma was right about the cat.
Episode One: The Reunion Dinner One Thumb Destroyed
In February Mum moved reunion dinner to a new place near Ah Ma, because the old restaurant had closed and turned into a phone shop. She asked every relative for a clear yes, in capital letters, with the word NOT in it for safety. Four people gave one. Second Uncle gave his finger:
Reunion dinner 7pm at the new place near Ma. NOT the old one. Uncle pls confirm
👍
he angry or what
👍
Then a month of silence, and at 7.14pm on the night itself, the first words he had produced since the last general election:
Where is everyone [image: closed shutter, phone shop poster]
Wrong place. Dad.
He was standing outside the old restaurant, photographing a shutter, having thumbed up a message that said NOT the old one in capitals. He walked in at 7.58pm, after the yusheng had been tossed without him, and told the table out loud that he thought thumbs-up means yes. It does, Uncle. It just does not mean reading.
Episode Two: The Week the Hoaxes Turned on Their Maker
In June the family finally staged an intervention on Auntie Siew Lan's forwarding, and she responded in the only language she speaks. Dad opened negotiations, signed and stamped:
Siew Lan please check before you forward. Dad.
ok ok sorry FWD: PLEASE DO NOT FORWARD UNVERIFIED MESSAGES!!! Send to everyone you love
👍
She apologised for forwarding, then forwarded a chain letter against forwarding to the same six people who had just begged her to stop. Second Uncle endorsed it, which proves he read none of it. Then Ah Ma, who had stayed out of the dispute like a sleeping volcano, settled it:
[image: white lily, silver glitter] Good Night Sweet Dreams. Forward to 10 people for good luck
See, Ma also forward
I give up
So it was never just Siew Lan. The hoaxes are hereditary, handed down the family line with the glitter, and Mum married into a dynasty of forwarders with no exit except the mute button her son had already found. Two days later Siew Lan forwarded a warning about the warning about forwarding, and nobody had the strength left to answer.
The Dishonours List
The Supreme Leader of Glitter: Ah Ma, for sending Wednesday on a Thursday and taking attendance anyway.
The Golden Thumb for Services to Getting Lost: Second Uncle, who confirmed the right restaurant and drove to the wrong one.
Scam Ambassador of the Year: Auntie Siew Lan, who has protected this family from every danger except herself.
The Wrong Room Medal: Dad, the only man to leak his own aircon negotiation to his entire bloodline.
The Defence Lawyer With No Wins: Mum, for lying to a grandmother every morning on behalf of a boy who wanted the car.
Mole of the Year: Shawn, three days late for his grandmother and eleven seconds early for a Honda.
The Collective Hostage Award: the whole family, for saluting a pink rose at 6.02am for three years because nobody wanted to be the first to stop.
The Ruling
This family does not talk, it clocks in: five relatives signing a glitter rose every dawn so nobody ever has to say anything real. Ah Ma runs the regime, Mum runs the switchboard, and the rest could be swapped for a thumbs-up, a forward button and a full stop with no loss of meaning. And Shawn, you are the one relative a cat could replace, and Ah Ma has already put that in writing.
